NATO Chief Criticizes EU For ‘Unfair’ Treatment
The European Union’s treatment of Turkey has been “unfair,” NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said July 7 in the Danish daily Politiken, Hurriyet reported. Rasmussen urged the European Union to “take a series of pragmatic steps to improve relations with Turkey” outside of Turkey’s accession negotiations with Brussels. The NATO chief advised the European Union to allow Turkey more decision-making power for military missions it participated in and to reach an agreement on Ankara’s request to join the European Defense Agency (EDA). It is “unfair” to exclude Turkey from the EDA while allowing Norway — a NATO member but not EU member — to be involved, Rasmussen added.
