Hehehe. I thought we'd have the age-long 9mm versus 45 battle here at TR Defence too.

What's your take on it? Given only one choice, which one would you take to a gunfight? Or which caliber do you think is the best for home defense or competition shooting?

9mm. Why? Because when the xxxx hits the fan, I'd rather have more bullets than big ones.

I'm yet to see anyone complain about having brought too many bullets to a gunfight.

Instead of looking only for 9mm and .45,it's better to look ones which have designed to replace them...
For example,.40 SW and .357 Sig (Not the ''Grandfather .357 Magnum) bullets have ballanced both bullets
(9mm and .45 ACP) characteristics...

Longer effective range from 9mm
Controllable recoil from 9mm
High magazine capacity from 9mm
Higher penetration capability from 9mm
and
Higher stopping power from .45 ACP

.357 Sig is written as .327 Sig mistakenly...

I would go with the .45 if you want something major for home protection. If you want to correct or improve your accuracy go with the 9mm.

I'd go for a 9mm for both home defense and carry on.

45 sounds big, bold and powerful and definitely got the PR value and the cowboy tradition on its side, but in scientific terms, remember that the impact kinetic energy of a bullet has a closer relation to the bullet's speed than to its size. The formula is E=1/2 mv^2. I'd rather have speed, penetration and a large cap magazine on my side than the 45's hyped-up "knock out power". Just my opinion though.

Besides, 9mm with +P+ ammo has the same punch (if not more) than a non-P .45 ammo.

I prefer both of them for home use protection.

.45! It's not about penetration. It's about the radius if the hole you open in the guy's chest. Which one can carry more water, a straw or a stove pipe?
